Who should apply

Who can apply

We welcome applications from students who call any state or country home — what matters for eligibility is the location of your academic institution.

Academic status
Currently a sophomore, junior, or senior; or graduated with an undergraduate degree in or since spring 2024; or currently in a master’s program having graduated in spring 2024 or later.
Institution location
Enrolled at (or, for recent graduates, having completed your undergraduate degree at) a college or university located in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, or West Virginia.
Field of study
Majoring in or focusing on political science or a closely related field.

What the application involves

An online form
Collects your contact information, checks eligibility, and asks for some additional information.

Three short essays
A statement of interest · 250–300 words
A bit about your background and interests, why you would like to pursue a doctoral degree in political science, and why you would like to attend the Institute.
A contribution statement · 250–300 words
The contribution your individual background, activities, and experiences would make to the Institute and to the cohort.
A research pitch · 250–300 words
A titled description of a topic you would like to research: whom or what, where, what time period, and why it matters and merits research.

An unofficial transcript
An electronic copy of your current transcript. If you are in a master’s program, send both a current and an undergraduate transcript.
04
One recommender
The name and email of a professor, faculty member, mentor, or teaching assistant familiar with your work, whom we will ask to serve as a reference.
